Gone are the days when sending bulk emails or sending newsletters required a huge budget

You can send 10000 emails for just a dollar and without a risk of the mails ending up in the spam folder given you have a genuine subscriber collection.

Let me give you a brief of how email marketing works

First, you need users to whitelist your email id by asking them to fill up a subscription form.

Once the user gives you his email id voluntarily, you ask him to check the confirmation mail and click on the confirmation button. This basically tells his email service (eg. Gmail) that this was a voluntary transaction and the user wants to receive mail from that particular email id or the domain.

Sending a mail from Gmail to Gmail doesn’t have any issue but when you want to send emails in bulk to your subscribers from your own domain, there is a high chance of it ending it in the SPAM if the subscriber base isn’t much engaged with your emails.

Now that you know the basics, let me tell you how to send emails in bulk at such a cheap rate.

You’d need two things:

  1. Amazon Simple Email Service (SES)
  2. EmailOctopus

Amazon Simple Email Service (SES) is a pay-as-you-go service based on the volume of emails sent and received. There are no subscriptions, no contract negotiations, and no minimum charges.

Charges for sending emails are pretty simple: $0.10 for every 1,000 emails you send.

All you need to do is signup on the AWS Platform, put in credit card details, and verify your domain and email addresses.

EmailOctopus is an email marketing software that routes emails through your own Amazon SES account to send promotional as well as transactional emails at 100x less cost when compared with the traditional email marketing platforms such as Mailchimp etc.

Pricing is simple. You can add up to 2,500 subscribers and send unlimited emails per month for free. But it will have their branding on emails which you send. Also, reports of the campaigns are available only for 30 days.

If you have more subscribers, you can upgrade the plan which is pretty cheap as well.

For the first 2500 subscribers, it will always be free.

If you have 5000 subscribers, the monthly cost is just $19

And you get to send unlimited emails.

It doesn’t charge for email as you’ll be paying for that to AWS SES (remember $0.10 for every 1,000 emails)

So once you’ve created an AWS account, you’ll need to create an AWS user on the AWS add user page.

Here, enter emailso as the user name and check Programmatic access for the access type.

Click the blue Next: Permissions button at the bottom.

You’ll get Access Key ID, Secret Access Key

Remember the SES Region you selected.

You’ll need these to configure the EmailOctopus.
